This past weekend I was in Disney World for the Princess Half Marathon. I have a standard packing list for this particular run, which I’ve been doing for five years now. It includes all of the stuff you would expect: sneakers, running clothes, headband, etc. But three years ago, after an absolutely miserable weekend, I added two more items to my packing list: DayQuil and NyQuil.
In 2011 I was super excited for this race. It was my second time, and the first time I’d just been too worried about finishing to enjoy myself. This time I’d trained well and felt ready. In fact, stepping onto the airplane in NYC, I felt fantastic.
Three hours later, landing in Orlando, I felt like death warmed over. I’d been hit out of nowhere with a terrible cold. I was hot and shaking, and I couldn’t stop sneezing. Nobody on the airport shuttle would stand near me. My pockets were filled with clean and dirty drink napkins a flight attendant had brought me. My poor nose was already raw.
All I could think about was getting to my hotel and crawling into bed. When I woke up a few hours later I felt worse. But I was on a press trip, and there were events to attend. I went to the hotel gift shop and grabbed the only cold medicine they had and a pack of tissues.
Not only did that medicine not help, it made me fall asleep in the middle of a press conference!
The next day was a blur. I stumbled through a 5K and a couple of meals, sitting as much as I could and trying not to gross everyone else out with my tissues. Then another person on the trip, who lived close by and had a car, offered to make a drug store run for me. I think I cried I was so happy. I asked her to please get me some DayQuil.
The next day I had to get up at 2am for the race. I took two of the caplets and put another two in my running arm band to take four hours later, right around race time. I loaded up on water (even though I knew I would be stuck with port-a-potties for the rest of the morning – ewww), and headed out to the race buses. My mind was starting to clear and for the first time in two days, I didn’t feel miserable.
There’s absolutely no way I would have been able to go 13.1 miles without that DayQuil! In fact, that 2011 race remains my fastest time ever for a half marathon (my theory is that I was in a hurry to crawl back into my comfy hotel bed).
I’ve been healthy for the rest of the races, thank goodness, but I always bring DayQuil and NyQuil with me just in case. And not just on race trips, but on all trips. I never ever want to feel like that while traveling again.
Listen, when I get sick, whenever possible I drop what I’m doing and climb into bed. But sometimes that’s just not possible! Did I want to skip that half marathon? Absolutely. And honestly, if I hadn’t been on a press trip and trying to impress people, I probably would have skipped it. Sometimes I have stuff to do that can’t wait, and I have to be on my feet and (relatively) lucid.

I always make sure that I have both DayQuil and NyQuil Severe in my house, ready in case I get sick. The last thing I want to do with a bad cold is go shopping for medicine. Or, you know, spend a weekend at Disney World. That weekend taught me to always be prepared!!
