My First TiVo
Somewhere around 1997 or 1998 I read about this thing that was going to replace VCRs. At the time, I had two VCRs and dozens of tapes with my favorite shows on them (and I had a lot of favorite shows). It was a lot to juggle.
I used to highlight what I wanted to record in the TV Guide each week, then program everything in – channel, time, length of recording, recording quality. But sometimes I’d forget to change a tape and record over something I hadn’t watched yet, or there wouldn’t be enough room on the tape. So when I read about this new digital video recorder that didn’t use tapes, I knew I’d be first in line to get one.
My first TiVo was made by Sony, and it completely revolutionized how I watched TV. It wasn’t perfect, but it was light years ahead of a VCR. I was in love.
A couple more TiVos followed, but when we moved to our house we switched to the DVRs provided by our cable company. And they were a disappointment. They had great features, but they were super glitchy. Something was always going wrong.
Now that I’m back with TiVo, I regret ever making the switch. For the past few months I’ve been using the TiVo Roamio Plus that I was given as part of working with TiVo, and I absolutely adore it. It’s so much more than a DVR!
My Roamio Plus records up to 150 hours of HD television, and it can record six channels at once (that seem like overkill, but all six were recording last Sunday). Another great feature is that I can watch Amazon Instant Video, Netflix, YouTube, Hulu Plus, and more right from my TiVo, no separate box needed.
And I don’t even have to watch my TiVo on my TV. I can watch my shows anywhere in my house or backyard using the TiVo app. I can even download certain programs to the app to watch when I’m not at home.
