Raw Cookie Dough In NYC

For my daughter’s thirteenth birthday she wanted the whole family to go to a new place in Manhattan that sells edible raw cookie dough. I really didn’t want to trek into the city just to get cookie dough, but you only turn thirteen once, and that’s what she wanted. And I’m really glad she did! It was fantastic, worth not only the subway ride from Brooklyn, but the wait in line once we got to the store.

DŌ Cookie Dough Confections is a raw cookie dough and ice cream scoop shop in New York City that sells edible raw cookie dough! You can find them at 550 LaGuardia Place in Greenwich Village.

DŌ Cookie Dough Confections is a raw cookie dough and ice cream shop that popped up near Washington Square Park earlier this year (after starting as an online-only store) and immediately drew worldwide buzz and long lines. Some days and times are busier than others.

My son got there first and texted the rest of us that the line was out the door (sometimes it stretches across the street and around the block). When we all finally got there the line didn’t look too bad, but once we got inside we saw we still had a ways to go – the line wrapped around the inside of the store. The staff really keeps things moving though, and I think we only waited about twenty minutes total.

Flavors

the four kinds of dough we got

Their in-store menu is extensive. You can combine scoops of raw dough and ice cream, and they also sell many different kinds of baked goods, all of which incorporate cookie dough in some way. There are even gluten-free and vegan options.

Before you place your order you can taste up to three different flavors. I really wish I’d known that before giving my order (I noticed a sign when I went back in to get a few pictures). I got one scoop of Chocolate Dream (brownie batter, Oreo cookies, and chocolate chips) and one scoop of Oatmeal M&M (oatmeal, M&Ms, and chocolate chips). The Chocolate Dream was good, but if I could do it all over again I would get an entire 8oz container of the Oatmeal M&M. It was SO tasty!

And yet, I barely ate any of it. Getting a scoop of cookie dough is not like getting a scoop of ice cream. I’m not saying you shouldn’t get multiple scoops, I’m just suggesting that you take a lid for your cup (they’re near the register) so that you can take the leftovers home, which we most definitely did.

Shipping

Not in NYC? They ship their edible raw cookie dough nationwide! But you’ll have to wait a little while, because as of this writing the earliest delivery date is more than two months out.

Why Is This Cookie Dough Safe To Eat?

If you’re like me, you can’t stay away from cookie dough when you’re baking. I also can’t resist brownie batter. My daughter takes it a step further and loves raw bread dough (excuse me while I throw up in my mouth a little). As far as we know, we’ve never gotten sick. So what’s the risk? Is raw cookie dough safe to eat?

Everyone likes to point to raw eggs as the culprit: you could get salmonella. And while that is a possibility, it’s not actually not what the FDA is most worried about. Raw flour has been known, in rare cases, to carry a strain of E. coli bacteria, which can cause all sorts of intestinal nastiness.

So while some of us may decide to take the risk in our own kitchens, that’s just not something a business can do. According to this article in Business Insider, the dough at DŌ is made with a pasteurized egg product and heat-treated flour. So it is safe to eat. Enjoy!
