I can remember when we got our first microwave oven. Compared to when we got things like cable, a VCR, and a cordless phone, we were practically early adopters of the microwave. And the one rule that was seared into my brain was this: no metal in the microwave, ever! Don’t leave the spoon in the bowl, don’t heat a mug that has metal trim. So, for several decades now, I’ve adhered to that rule as if my life depended on it.
I was surprised when I opened our new Frigidaire microwave and saw a metal shelf! How could that be? Wasn’t that against the rules? Was Frigidaire trying to experiment on me?
This shelf is a pretty neat thing. Being able to heat two big dinner plates at one time means one doesn’t get cold waiting for the other one to get done. It’s especially handy when heating up a few dishes at the same time while trying to get a bunch of things on the table at once for dinner.
Of course, there are times when you need to remove the shelf. When making popcorn you absolutely have to take it out. Vegetables in a steamer bag also won’t work if they puff up and hit the shelf. And I do have at least one casserole dish that’s too tall to fit under the shelf. I don’t like appliances that are high-maintenance, so it’s important to me that it’s not a pain in the butt to get this shelf in and out. Thankfully, it’s not.
If I have one complaint it’s what to do with the shelf when I need it out of the microwave. It would be great if there were a place to slide it in under the microwave that wouldn’t interfere with the light or the ventilation system. Or maybe a set of hooks near the very top of the inside of the microwave, so that it would still be in the microwave but out of the way. Something so that I don’t have to plop it on the counter when I’m making popcorn. But I’m glad it’s there – if it’s bothering me too much, maybe that means I’m eating too much microwave popcorn. :-)
