Ion Sound Lounge: Bluetooth Speakers Disguised As Furniture

There are lots of bluetooth speakers on the market, but this is the first one I’ve been encouraged to sit on.

The Ion Sound Lounge is a 2.1 speaker sound system. It looks like a foot stool and has a nice padded top, but inside there are two stereo speakers and a subwoofer.

You can stream music and other sounds from pretty much any bluetooth device – I tried it out with both my cell phone and my computer, and both work great. As soon as you turn the Sound Lounge on it starts searching for something to pair with. If you want to pair a different device, you just have to turn the speaker off for a few seconds and then back on.

The Sound Lounge gets its power from an AC adapter, which is included. Also included are two sets of RCA connectors. One set can be used to hook the speakers up to any device with a headphone jack. I hooked it up to my digital keyboard, which sounded amazing – so much better than the built-in speakers.

The best part about the Sound Lounge is that it’s really powerful. You can use the other RCA connector to hook up to four Sound Lounges together, but I was getting huge, beautiful sound from just the one.

There are controls for both volume and bass on the back of the Sound Lounge. With my phone’s sound set to the highest level, I didn’t dare turn the Sound Lounge’s volume past the 3/4 mark – I was afraid I’d blow the speakers!

There’s a handy zipper pocket on the bottom of the Sound Lounge where you can store all of those cords when you’re not using them, with room for more items, like remote controls or game controllers.

It’s easy to find this online and in stores for under $100. Just yesterday I actually found it for $69, and Bed Bath & Beyond has it today for $79 (combine that with FreeShipping.com’s cash back to save even more!) so look out for sales if you want a deal.

I think this would be a fantastic gift for a college student, providing two things every dorm room needs: more sound, and another place to sit! It would also be great for people who listen to a lot of music out of small speakers, like from a computer or cell phone. There’s no way I’ll be using my computer’s speakers now, with this as an option.

The only feature I wish it had is a rechargeable battery. I would love to see that as an option on future models. Although with speakers this powerful, that might not be a viable option.
