I can’t dance. That’s a fact as true as the sky being blue and water being wet. But I can’t. I mean, I can learn moves if I have to. I’ve been in musicals and such. But I’m not a quick study, and I’m not at all graceful (tap was the only dance class I got a good grade in in college, because it was mathematical and I could be stiff). I have to work at it for a long time to look good.
Which is why I’ve been a closet Just Dance dancer for years. Shades drawn, nobody home. Definitely no sharing of videos.
Let me introduce you to my moves with the new Just Dance 2015 (and please bear in mind, this was my first time doing all of these songs):
Walk This Way (if you dare)
Now let me show you my daughter, who actually can dance:
And that’s the beauty of Just Dance 2015: Whether you’re a great dancer or have two left feet, you’re up and moving and having fun! Basically you just try to copy what the dancers on the screen do. There are little pictures in the bottom corner to give you a clue as to what moves are coming up.
Good dancer or not, these moves are not easy. It’s not like I’m going to do a song a few times and master it and get bored.
Keep in mind, we’re supposed to be doing different moves!!
This latest version of the Just Dance series has more than forty songs, and there’s something for just about everyone. Some of my favorites:
- Ellie Goulding’s Burn
- Bonnie Tyler’s Holding Out For A Hero
- Run DMC and Aerosmith’s Walk This Way
- Dead or Alive’s You Spin Me Round (OMG, hello sixth grade!!)
- John Newman’s Love Me Again
But I’m old. My daughter has totally different favorites;
- Pharrell’s Happy
- Tetris (I hadn’t really thought of it as a song, but OK!)
- Ylvis’ What Does The Fox Say
- Lady Gaga’s Bad Romance
And, I had to buy Gangnam Style from the Downloadable Content. I had to. I love that song.
A cool feature is that if more than one person is dancing, you’re not necessarily dancing the same moves. Some songs are solos, some are duets, some are dance crews, and some are lead singers with back-up dancers. You can even choose to have the lyrics on the screen and sing along for a Karaoke Bonus.
World Dance Floor is another cool feature: If you’re hooked up to XBox Live, you can compete against other people who are playing at that very moment, anywhere in the world! Or, you can challenge your own friends (they don’t necessarily have to be online with you, you could challenge a score that they earned before).
And, for better or worse, AutoDance is still there: the feature that replays your moves in a little montage when you’re done dancing. You can save these videos, and even share them if you’re brave enough.
We all know which part of Gangnam Style this is
For my daughter, this game is just pure fun. She started from the first song and is doing each and every one of them at least twice to get better, before she moves on to the next song. She’s very serious about her scores. I somehow managed to beat her score ONCE and she was pissed!
But for me, it’s just a fun way to get up and moving. If you asked me to get up and do aerobics I’d tell you to shut up and pass the popcorn and remote. But in trying to keep up with the dancers on screen and learn the moves (and sometimes even sing!), I don’t even realize how hard I’m exercising until the song ends and I’m totally out of breath!
You will sweat doing these dances. And with winter coming, Just Dance 15 is going to be a great way to get our energy out without having to brave the cold.
Knowing that a lot of tweens and teens will be playing this game, Just Dance has partnered with Stomp Out Bullying to spread the message that “it’s okay to dance to your own beat!” Check out the link for resources and how to help stop bullying.
Just Dance 15 is available now for many platforms. You can buy it in stores or online, including at Amazon.
