Lifeproof FLiP magnetic iPhone case review

My daughter’s old iPhone 6 has been limping along, with the battery draining fast everyday and not much storage to speak of. It was the first smartphone she ever got that wasn’t a hand-me-down, but it was showing its age. So, she was really excited to get a new iPhone 11 Pro.

Picking out the phone was easy. The case was harder. Her old phone had a case with a slot in the back for cards, and we both agreed that her new phone’s case needed a similar feature. She wears a backpack on her commute, and digging her wallet out to get her MetroCard or debit card or ID a dozen times a day was a pain.

LifeProof sent me a FLiP iPhone wallet case, along with an Alpha Glass screen protector, to review. The new iPhones only came out today, so she’s been using the case for only five or six hours, but so far it’s been great!

Wallet case features

The best iPhone wallet case, in my opinion, does not cover the phone’s screen. I’ve never understood those cases, where you have to open them just to get to your screen every single time. The FLiP leaves your screen open and uncovered at all times, for easy access.

Fit

We put the screen protector on first. I was nervous to put it on, because I saw a Verizon employee screw it up and break one once. But I got the Alpha Glass screen protector on with no problem. It comes with a plastic guide that you put on over the phone, which ensures correct placement for the protector—no guessing.

The case is just one piece, so that went on easily as well. Once the phone was in, it felt like a perfect fit. I tried taking it off and that was a lot harder though, so be careful.

Card and money holder

The “flip” part of the FLiP case opens out of the back, so it’s totally hidden and out of your way when you’re using the phone.

When you do open it, you’ll find two slots for cards, and a pocket for money. It stays closed with a magnet.

The magnet worked great with two cards and some money in the wallet. I don’t know how it would do if you stuffed it, and I don’t recommend it. It’s made to hold just a few things, which is how it can have such a thin profile.

Note that once you have cards in the wallet, the back does not lie completely flat (but the magnet keeps it closed).

Stand

The wallet part also doubles as a stand, holding your phone up in the horizontal position so that you can watch movies or Facetime with someone, hands free!

Ports and charging

All of the ports, mics, and speakers are easily accessible. My daughter plugged her Apple charger into the phone with the case on, no problem.

The case is also compatible with Qi charging. We don’t have a Qi charger, though, so we couldn’t test that out.

Camera

The three big lenses in the back of the phone are never blocked, whether you have the wallet part of the case opened or closed.

How the case looks

The case itself looks (and feels) sturdy. This case is by no means ugly, but it does look solid, not sleek. Practicality and safety were definitely the driving forces behind this case, not looks. But when you’re carrying a mini-computer in your hand, function wins over form.

The wallet part is covered with fabric, which is stain- and water-resistant. Having fabric on so much of the case softens the look a lot, although you can’t see it from the front.
