Earlier this week we recorded our podcast live from Toy Fair, a giant toy show at the massive Javits Center on the far west side of Manhattan. We had two great guests: Maria Bailey, who talked about some research she did on millennial moms, and Tonda Bunge Sellers, who discussed the blurring lines between old-fashioned and digital toys.
We also talked about some favorite toy picks from Toy Fair, and Rebecca’s recommendation was Mattel’s new ThingMaker 3D printer. At $300, it’s cheaper than most 3D printers, and will undoubtedly be a hot toy for Christmas, since it goes on sale in October.
I checked on Amazon, not really expecting to find it. But lo and behold, there it was! Available for pre-order, now, almost nine months before it will actually be available. In fact, it’s already the #1 seller in Action & Toy Figure Play Sets.
Which begs the question: If you want one of these for your kid, do you need to buy it now? I mean, for Pete’s sake, some of us *might* still have a few Christmas decorations out from the Christmas that just happened!!
And if you do decide this early, you’ll be doing so without the benefit of reading real-people reviews or being able to ask a friend who already has it.
One of the hot toys from last year was the BB-8 Droid from Sphero. I thought it was adorable and bought one. I meant it to be a gift for the whole family. But then, my daughter didn’t even want to see the new Star Wars movie, so I ended up giving it just to my son.
And he really hasn’t played with it. I have, and my five-year-old niece thought it was a blast. But other than that it hasn’t gotten any use. Right now it’s a $150 paperweight (albeit an adorable one). That’s the danger with buying the “hot” toy early.
If I can get my hands on a ThingMaker before October and test it out, I’ll try to make your decision easier! Until then, I should probably put away those Christmas decorations.
