Sure, I’ll Fight Some Smears

The thing that has always bothered me the most about politics is how easy it is to spread lies. For every person speaking up and disputing the lie, there are three or four people repeating it. But leave it to Barack Obama to take decisive action. His campaign has launched Fight The Smears, and it is simple, and brilliant. When the Republicans start a rumor, people can go to Fight The Smears for the truth.

Of course, as is often the case with something like this, the people who need to go to this site the most will not purposely go. So here, supposedly, is the plan: get as many sites as possible to link to Fight The Smears, which will hopefully propel the site to the top of search engine results. So, I’m doing my part. I have no idea if search engines actually work like that, but it can’t hurt.

  1. Muslims Against Sharia says

Senator Obama is NOT a Dirty Muslim!

“What you won’t hear from this campaign or this party is the kind of politics that uses religion as a wedge,” says Mr. Obama, while denouncing statements of him being a Muslim as a smear. Why is the presidential candidate who claims to be religiously inclusive is treating the word “Muslim” as an insult? Apparently, it is OK for Mr. Obama to be associated with terrorists like William Ayers or racists like Jeremiah Wright, but God forbid somebody would call him a Muslim! No, he won’t stand for that kind of smear! We admit that most terrorists are Muslims, but most Muslims are not terrorists and the statement on Mr. Obama’s website is insulting to hundreds of millions of people.

How could a man who discards his family heritage in favor of political expediency be even considered for presidency of the United States? Where are all the so-called “Islamic civil rights groups” like CAIR, MPAC, ISNA, MAS, etc. who are quick to defend every Islamic terrorist, but are silent when Muslims in general are being denigrated? Would Mr. Obama have the same reaction if someone claimed that he was raised as a Jew? We sincerely doubt that.

Muslims Against Sharia demand immediate removal of “SMEAR: Barack Obama is a Muslim” statement from the official Barack Obama’s website as well as an apology for giving the word “Muslim” a negative connotation.

I understand why you’re feeling the way you are, but I think your anger is misplaced. I doubt that Mr. Obama thinks for a second that being called a Muslim is a smear. But that’s sure as hell how the Republicans mean it, and that’s what he has to deal with.

I also think you’re being a bit naive about politics. There are two people running. Put side by side, there is absolutely no question which one belongs to the more tolerant party, and which one will be a more tolerant president. There’s a game being played, and the Republicans are without a doubt better at it. Mr. Obama can stick hard to every last one of his ideals and lose, or he can come out swinging on topics that are likely to sway voters. I’m guessing that he doesn’t like it any more than you do.

If you continue to spend your energy railing against Mr. Obama’s reaction to an intended insult rather than on the people who are trying to hurt him with the remark in the first place, then you are doing damage to a candidate who is more likely to make sure that ALL religions are treated fairly.
