So I’ve gotten into a very bad habit the last couple of nights. I’ve gone to bed around 3am (not totally unusual for me, unfortunately). But my son started summer camp yesterday, and the bus picks him up at 7am! If he misses the bus then I have a two-hour round-trip to get him there, and I am NOT going to let that happen. So unlike during the school year, when he mostly fends for himself, I’ve been getting up at 5:30 with him and making sure he gets out the door on time. Then I go back to sleep for a few more hours of bad sleep (phone calls, people at the door, and Fiona doesn’t start camp until Monday so she is here too). I’m wrecked.
But tonight, ironically, I’m going to something called Sleep No More. I had intended to go in knowing as little about it as possible, but then the people we’re going with (who have seen it already) sent a very cryptic email warning us to wear sneakers, contacts instead of glasses if possible (I wear neither), and to have a big snack or light dinner beforehand because the “show” will last about three hours. Curiosity got the best of me and I checked it out a little online.
It’s not a play, but it’s based loosely on Macbeth. Although, there are very few words. It takes place in several warehouses that have been made into an old hotel, with about one-hundred rooms. The audience can wander around at will, but everyone must wear a mask and cannot talk at all. You can touch anything you want, except for the performers (who are often naked and reportedly hot). You can follow one cast member, or not, or just explore empty rooms.
Huh. I’m not sure I’ll like it – I tend to like my theater straight and un-messed-with – but I’m definitely looking forward to finding out.
