When does Toy Story Land open? Now we know!
I was watching GMA this morning when the announcement was made: Toy Story Land is opening in Walt Disney World’s Hollywood Studios on June 30th!
The first time we took our kids to Disney World was nine years ago, shortly after the Toy Story Mania ride opened. Since we were there as part of the very first Disney Social Media Moms Conference, we were lucky enough to attend a party in Hollywood Studios after the park had closed, and we got to ride Toy Story Mania over and over that evening. Since then it’s been our family’s favorite ride. We’ve been back a bunch of times since then, and I’ve still never beaten my son’s score. I need to play more video games.
I’ve always had a soft spot for Disney’s Hollywood Studios. The very first time my future husband and I went to Disney World together in 1990, Hollywood Studios was new (it was called Disney-MGM Studios back then, and I still catch myself calling it MGM sometimes), and we got to go on the original version of the Backlot Tour, which was amazing! The best part was when the tram drove onto a set that wasn’t supposed to be in use, and then, naturally, filming starts up as a tanker truck explodes and water gushes towards the tram from a water tower. Then everything resets for the next shot. Magical! Somewhere, I still have a picture of the facade used for The Golden Girls’ house that I took on that tour.

I was disappointed in 2014 when the Backlot Tour closed, but by then it had been scaled back a lot. The space it did still have was needed for Star Wars Land and Toy Story Land, so in this case, I can live happily with the change.
The new Toy Story Land will have two new rides joining Toy Story Mania: a roller coaster called Slinky Dog Dash, and Alien Spinning Saucers (complete with The Claw!). Plus, if you’re hungry, there will be Woody’s Lunch Box, with Toy Story-themed food.
But since it’s Disney World, those four attractions will surely be in the middle of a highly themed, impeccably detailed land that will make you feel like you’ve shrunk down to the size of a toy!
