How to cure a cold sore fast, before it even shows!

I get a lot of cold sores

I’ve been getting cold sores for about fifteen years. I’d probably had the virus that causes them inside of me for longer than that, but I got my first cold sore after having my first child. I was tired and a frazzled, and the virus saw its chance.

I used to get them about twice a year, but in the past year things have gotten much worse. I had a stretch last year where I got one a month. They were so embarrassing, and also painful! They were affecting my social life, my work, every aspect of my life.

And then everything changed when a work acquaintance mentioned Valtrex to me. I’d never heard of it, and when I googled it, sure enough, it’s used to treat herpes, shingles, and chicken pox. Cold sores are a form of herpes, so could this actually work??

I made an appointment with my doctor, who had to look up if you could treat cold sores this way. So this is definitely not common knowledge, even among doctors. But he determined that yes, I could take Valtrex for a cold sore!

He prescribed Valacyclovir, the generic for Valtrex. I filled the prescription immediately.

Now, the pills are big. Like, really big. I was worried that I wouldn’t actually be able to swallow them. But I put the bottle in my medicine cabinet, ready for the next cold sore.

How to use Valtrex to treat cold sores

Here’s how it works: As soon as I feel a cold sore coming on (I get a tingle on my lip, and a little later a spot that feels hard), I swallow two of the pills (not on an empty stomach – I could get nauseous).

Twelve hours later, I take two more. And then I’m done!

Does Valtrex work?

Valtrex for cold sores is absolutely the best way to get rid of them fast that I’ve tried. I’d been using Abreva for years, and it did seem to make a small difference, but I would still have a huge cold sore to deal with for a week.

With Valtrex, though, the cold sore is basically frozen in time at whatever stage it’s in when you take the first pair of pills. So as long as you take the first pills before your cold sore is visible, you’ll stop it before anybody else can see it. I almost always catch them at the beginning. It still take a few days for the sore to heal, but nobody knows it’s there.

Pretty much the only time I get a visible cold sore is if it starts while I’m sleeping, and I wake up with a visible one. But even then, I’ve usually caught it early, and as long as I hurry up and take Valtrex, it won’t get bigger.

This has been life changing for me. If you get cold sores, I urge you to go to your doctor and talk about a prescription of Valtrex or Valacyclovir. You won’t have to stress about a giant cold sore messing up important events ever again!
