Why You Should Get A Second Opinion About Invisalign

For as long as I can remember I’ve wanted to fix my crooked teeth, but I definitely didn’t want braces (No bagels? No popcorn? No apples? No thank you!). Invisalign seemed like great option (I’m a member of the Invisalign Mom Advisory Board, and am receiving complimentary treatment). But when I asked my dentist about it, he said it wouldn’t work on me. His practice also did orthodontia, so I figured he knew what he was talking about.

It never occurred to me that he just might not have any experience with Invisalign, or that since he didn’t provide them he didn’t want to lose my business by recommending them.

Later, when I went to a blogging event held by Invisalign, I saw before-and-after pictures that blew me away. If those teeth could be fixed with Invisalign, couldn’t mine?

The answer, of course, was yes, and I was kicking myself for not getting a second opinion in the first place. I would have been done with treatment by now!

Dentists and orthodontists are health professionals – second opinions are part of the territory. You’re not insulting them by getting one, you’re being smart about your health.

And it’s not just about getting a second opinion; it’s about getting a second opinion from someone who has experience with the product. You wouldn’t go to someone who only sells sneakers and ask them if you should buy boots, right? Look for an orthodontist who has experience with Invisalign (you can find one on the Invisalign website). My orthodontist, Dr. Hung, creates treatment options using braces, Invisalign, or a combination of the two – whatever is best for you and your teeth. Find someone like that, who will look at all of the options.

The other night I changed to my twelfth set of aligners – I’m almost half-way through my initial treatment! I hate to think that anyone else has delayed treatment like I did, or gotten braces instead, just because they didn’t get a second opinion about Invisalign.
